Sketches of botanical gold brooch with amber gemstone

ON THIS PARTICULAR PIECE

The brooch is not coming back. We made one anyway.

Brooches are out of fashion. We are aware. We made this one because a category being unfashionable is not the same as a category being finished. A brooch does something a necklace cannot — it sits where you place it, and the wearer chooses where that is. We were interested in the choice.

The citrine was cut as a brilliant rather than a step. Step cuts read as cold; brilliants hold warm light better, and the stone here is a warm honey rather than a clean lemon. The leaves around it were cut from gold sheet, shaped over a wooden form, and soldered in a slight asymmetry — three on one side, two on the other. Symmetry would have made it a botanical illustration. The asymmetry makes it a leaf.

I

The Stone

Faceted citrine. Honey, not yellow. Selected for warmth, not clarity.

II

The Leaves

Each one cut from sheet, shaped, and soldered individually.

III

The Pin

Steel, with a safety roll. Tested against linen and wool.

IV

The Scale

38mm. Large enough to carry a coat. Small enough for a collar.
