ON THIS PARTICULAR PIECE

A green stone behaves differently in the hand.

Emeralds are not graded the way diamonds are. There is no F colour, no VS1 clarity. There is only what the stone looks like in your hand under good light. The one we chose has inclusions — they are called the garden, in the trade, and a stone without them is usually a stone that is not really an emerald. The colour is deep without being dark. The transparency is partial, by intention.

The two leaves were cut from gold sheet and shaped over a wooden form. We considered casting. We rejected it. A cast leaf reads as a copy of a leaf. A leaf cut and shaped by hand has a thickness that varies across its length, the way a real leaf does. The bezel was closed at the back to protect the stone, which is softer than people assume. Emeralds chip. We would rather the ring outlive the wearer than the other way around.

I

The Stone

Colombian emerald, 0.6ct. Selected for tone, not transparency.

II

The Motif

Two leaves curve from the bezel. Cut from sheet, shaped, soldered.

III

The Bezel

Closed-back. Emeralds are softer than diamonds. The setting protects them.

IV

The Band

2.2mm, slightly tapered. Reads thinner than it is.
