ON THIS PARTICULAR PIECE
A diamond should not have to introduce itself.
The brief was a ring that disappears into the wearer. Not invisible — present, but not announcing. The fine trace chain was chosen over a more decorative link because the chain is meant to deliver the stone to the collarbone, not to compete with it. Three lengths were settled on, each tested against a real neck rather than a velvet stand. The differences are small. The differences matter.
The diamond was selected from a parcel of eleven. Some had higher grades. The one we chose has a quality that grading does not measure: in warm light, it returns the warmth rather than rejecting it. A laboratory tests a stone under cold conditions. A person wears one in candlelight, in lamplight, in the half-hour before sunset. We thought that was more interesting.
I

Round brilliant, 0.42ct, VS1 clarity, F colour. Selected by eye, not paper.

Six claws, hand-set. Filed back until they read as part of the stone.
III

Fine trace. Drawn through the plate, cut, and soldered by hand.
IV

Three lengths. Each tested on the body, not on a stand.
