ON THIS PARTICULAR PIECE
Eleven sketches.Sixty stones considered.This one.
The form came quickly , a hexagon, which is what water makes when it crystallises under pressure. What took time was the weight. The pendant had to fall Without pulling. Too light and it moves restlessly. Too heavy and it asks too much of the neck. We adjusted the chain gauge three times before the balance felt inevitable.
The diamond was selected from a parcel of sixty. We passed over stones with better certificates. The one we chose has a quality that grading does not measure: in warm light, it seems to hold the light Rather than return it. We thought that was more interesting.
I
The drawing
Done in pencil, on cartridge paper. Never on screen first.
II
The stone
Viewed under daylight, before the certificate is opened.
III
The Making
Cut and formed by hand. no cast forms. Every seam filed.
IV
The finishing
One goldsmith sets the stone. Four hours of polish follow. Then it is done.
