ON THIS PARTICULAR PIECE
The pair was never meant to be identical.
Sophia spent two afternoons going through a parcel of forty pearls. She was not looking for a perfect match. She was looking for a near-match — two pearls that read as a pair from across a room but, examined closely, are clearly two different objects. This is harder than finding identical pearls. Identical pearls can be ordered. A near-pair has to be felt.
Baroque pearls are not graded for symmetry. They are graded for surface and lustre. The two we chose have a small crease on each, in different places, which catches the light when the head turns. We could have polished them out. We did not. Cultured perfection is a finish a machine can produce. The light moving across an asymmetric surface is something only a real object does.
I
The Pearls
Baroque, freshwater. Selected as a near-pair, never a matched pair.
II
The Post
18k gold, slim, hand-soldered. No friction-back; pearls deserve a screw.
III
The Drop
Suspended on a fine gold loop. Movement is part of the design.
IV
The Light
Each pearl was chosen for how it held warm light, not cold.
